News & Events Lieutenant Governor tours top EEA winning project On May 14, Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado participated in an award celebration and toured the project, designed by HDR, which recently won ACEC’s highest national engineering award, the Grand Conceptor, for excellence in design. The winning first-of-its-kind project turns onion waste into energy. At the event held at the Gill Onions plant in Oxnard, Lieutenant Governor Maldonado praised the project to an assembled group of local officials, media and invited guests. The Gills Onion project won the top EEA award despite facing a very competitive field, including the Dallas Cowboys' phenomenal new stadium and an ambitious transportation system created for the Winter Olympics in British Columbia.
